Chasse Secrets Chapter 19

"I'm pretty sure if it's the stalker he or she wouldn't need a GPS. That's kinda the point of being a stalker" Sophie whispered as Carson and she edged towards the bottom of the stairs. "Good point". "Go look". Sophie nudged Carson. "Why me? It's your stalker" Carson shot back. "But it's your house". Carson rolled her eyes, admitting defeat. Carson cautiously crept up the steps. Sophie pulled her phone out of her pocket. Carson rounded the corner at the top of the stairs. Sophie craned her neck forward as Carson walked down the hall.
"Matt, Aaron! How many times have I told you not to play ball in the house!". Sophie breathed an enormous sigh of relief as she listened to Carson order her little brothers to bed.
                                    **************************************
The final strains of "How great Thou art" flowed from the church as the Duvals along with the rest of the church members filed out.
Sophie had left Carson's shortly after the whole stalker-turned-brothers-and-baseball fiasco. She texted her before she left for church this morning to ask if things were okay but she hadn't responded yet.
"Wonderful sermon, Kurt. Just wonderful" Mr.Duval boomed. Kurt had given the sermon today seeing as Rev. Grant was away on vacation. He had preached on forgiveness, a subject he had previously discussed with the youth in Wednesday night Bible study.
"I tried, sir" Kurt replied, scratching the back of his head nervously. "It really was very moving and powerful. I could feel the spirit with you" said Carol. "Thank you Carol. What about you Sophie? You didn't happen to see any of the youth falling asleep did you?". Sophie smiled. "No, you had their full attention" she assured. "Where did you brother run off to? I saw him in the congregation" he inquired. "He had to talk to Henry. Henry's helping him with his PR firm" Mr. Duval explained before Sophie could open her mouth to speak. "I remember Henry mentioning something about that" he said, excitingly waging his forefinger as he spoke. "Yes, we're all very proud of Ted" Mr. Duval boasted.
"Well we'll let you talk to the rest of the congregation. See you Wednesday" Carol interrupted, clutching Mr.Duval's arm. Kurt nodded a brief goodbye, as the Duvals hurried out of the church, before he spoke to the next family.
They stood just outside the church, quickly glancing around them for Ted. Sophie pulled her phone out from her purse to check the time. 11:59 A.M. Kurt had finished earlier than Rev. Grant usually did. When Rev. Grant preached they were lucky to get out of church at 12:05 P.M.
As if on cue Ted briskly walked towards them, wriggling his keys from his pants pocket. "Hey! We should get going if we want to get anything done today" he said to Sophie, motioning to the parking lot. "I've been ready! You're the one who's been chatting away" Sophie reminded him. Ted rolled his eyes as though to say 'yeah right!'.
"I'll see you later Mom" he said, hugging Carol goodbye. "Bye Dad" he added, giving him a wave. "Bye Mama" Sophie said, hugging her mom as well. "Make sure you're home by 6 P.M. for dinner" Carol called after her children. "I'll make sure of it Mama" Sophie replied. "Bye Dad".
Carol and Mr. Duval watched Sophie and Ted as they hurried to the parking lot. Ted opened the passenger side door. Sophie threw her purse in first before climbing into her seat. Ted made his way around the car, opened the door, and gets in. "So you wanna just pick something up through a drive-through?" he asked as he turned the key in the ignition. "Sounds fine to me" Sophie replied.
              **********************************************
Three hours later. Sophie sat Indian-style in the floor of what would be Ted's office, organizing his files. Every time she finished one box he presents her with another. She's beginning to think he has a never ending supply of boxes filled with files.
As soon as they got there Ted introduced Sophie to all of his soon-to-be co-workers. There was Anna, Craig, and Steve, all of whom were from his college days. Then there was Vick, Brandon, Angela, Andrew, and some guy whose name she couldn't pronounce or remember. They were from Delaware.
They all seemed to be carbon copies of Ted. Intellectual, driven, and kept the same fake, over the top smile on their faces. Yet she somehow sensed them to be genuinely nice.
The building wasn't extremely big, but wasn't by any means small. The lobby had pale blue walls. A kind of blue that reminded Sophie of a baby blanket she had as a child. One the front door of the building read 'Duval PR Firm' in crisp, white letters. Sophie couldn't get over how peculiar his name looked on the door.
"Here's another box for ya" Andrew said as he dropped a box down beside Sophie. "Thanks" she replied, pushing her hair back with her hand. "This isn't too much for ya?" he asked. Sophie glances around at the boxes surrounding her. "Define 'too much'" she quipped.
He chuckled slightly as he lowered himself to the floor next to her. "Let me see" he said, reaching for a box. "So how do you know my brother from Delaware exactly?". "Well, don't tell you parents but I met him at a bar" he explained. "It was right after he had graduated, he was looking for a job, so I told him to apply where I was working. Sure enough he got the job". Sophie shoved one box out of her way and pulled another towards her.
"So did you got to college in Delaware as well?" she asked. "Yep! Born and raised there too" he informed her. "I bet you and you parents were surprised to have him back" he added, flipping through a folder. "I was the only one who didn't know actually" she replied, thinking about that day for the first time. "But we were all surprised by his new look".
An amused expression passed over Andrew's face. "Yeah, he went all cave-man on us when he left the company". "When was that?". "He didn't tell you? It was about two or three months ago". Sophie practically halted her work, shocked by Andrew's words. "He was pretty sketchy about the whole thing. Wouldn't tell anyone what had happened. Neither would the company" he added, replacing the lid on a box. "About a week or two after he left he came to me telling me about how had has come into some money when your great Aunt Besty died, it is Aunt Besty, right?".
At first Sophie just stared at him blankly. "Well I call her Aunt Bes, but yeah. Now that you mentioned it I do remember him saying something about all that. I must have just forgotten with all the hoopla lately" she spoke, her voice unsure of itself. He bit his lips, narrowing his eyes down at the papers in his hands. "Your brother told me about your friend, That had to be hard. Knowing she could be dead and not being able to do anything about it". "Yeah, it was".
The door to the office abruptly swung open and they twisted their torsos around to see Ted. "Hey guys! We need some help painting!" he announced. "I'm still in my church clothes" Sophie replied, motioning to her skirt and sweater. "One step ahead of you sis! I brought smocks".
Ted watched impatiently as Sophie and Andrew place the papers on top of the boxes. "Come on" he said. "I need y'all to help me decide between eggplant and iris".
                            ****************************************
Carol jumped at the click the lock made as Ted turned the key. "You're home" she addressed Ted and Sophie, putting her book down on the coffee table. Sophie locked the door behind them. "Yep, finally!" Ted replied. "Dinner will be ready in an hour or so, the spaghetti sauce just needs to cook some more". "Mmmm, I love your spaghetti" Sophie said, dropping her purse on the coffee table.
"Dad's upstairs I guess?" Ted asked, pointing to the stairs. "Yeah, he's looking for the Fall decorations.I'm pretty late with them this year" she answered, stifling a deep yawn. Ted galloped up the steps without a word.
Sophie eyed the book on the table. "A history of the first ladies" Sophie read. "I just started reading it this afternoon , it's good. So far". "It looks good. I've always wondered about the women behind the men" Sophie said, taking the book in her hands. "I've always hated that expression" Carol replied, wrinkling her nose in disdain.
Sophie grinned at her words. Most people would look at her mother and see a conjunction of contradictions. While when Sophie looked at her mother she saw a person who never realized she was expected to be strictly one thing.
"Did you get to meet any of Ted's friends?" Carol inquired. "Yes, I talked to his friend Andrew some" Sophie told her, hoping she couldn't tell she was thinking about what Andrew had said. "I think Ted might have mentioned him at Christmas. "What's he like?" Carol questioned further. Sophie thought about it for a moment. "Talkative" she finally said. "In a good or bad way?" Carol asked plainly. "Good, definitely goo" replied Sophie, nodding her head rapidly.
Bing! Sophie sat the book down, opened her purse, and fished her cellphone out. "Who's that?" Carol asked, bugging her eyes playfully? "Let me see". One new text message it read. Sophie opened her text. It was from Ian. "Hey Soph! Could you come over? It's important.'. "It's Ian, he wants to know if I can come over". "Ooohh" Carol replied knowingly. Sophie rolled her eyes. "I'll be back in time to set the table" Sophie assured. "Tell them I said hi" Carol told her, picking her book up. "I will" Sophie said, heading out the door.
                                          ***********************************
"Hey! Is everything okay?" Sophie blurted out as Ian opens the door. Ian glanced left, then right, then ushered Sophie in, shutting the door after her. "Is that a yes?" she asked anxiously. "Just wait" he said, taking her hand, leading her down the hall. "For what?" she exclaimed, her tiny feet following him reluctantly. He stopped at his bedroom door, swung it open, and guided her in.  It's cleaner than she would have expected. She takes a seat on the edge of his bed, as he shuts the door.
"Olivia remembers" he said, as he sits beside her. "Remembers? As in everything?" she asked. "Maybe I should start from the beginning" he replied. "Yes, please".
"The evidence, it was a pocket knife, Olivia's actually. My parents gave it to her for her birthday, weird I know, but that's what she wanted. Well they found it in the woods. It had some of her blood dried on it. That's when she came clean".
"About what?" "Well to begin with, there was never a cult". Sophie knited her brows together in confusion. "Do you mean it wasn't truly a cult?". "I mean there was never a cult or even a nature group". "How did you find out?". "The police were questioning her again, and they told her someone had told them she was involved in a cult. She told them that it was something she had made up to get to me, to fool me. She was tired of me being so overprotective and nosy". "Who told you about that?". "Olivia". "All those papers?". "She made those up too". "All that to get to you". "Yeah, she made them months ago, figuring I would be snooping in her room, and that it would be funny to watch me fall for her hoax".
"What else does she remember?". "The night she went missing, the guy she was meeting, it was Dean". "Oh my gosh! Seriously?". Ian nodded, clenching his jaw. "She had brought the pocket knife with her that night. She said she always kept it in her purse". "So what did she do? Slit her wrist and left the knife in the woods?". "She doesn't remember that far".
"So is that all?". Ian shook his head. "She was running away". "Are you serious?". "Yeah, she and Dean had been planning it for weeks. They were just so in love. At least that's what she claims". "That just doesn't sound like her. She seemed content, she seemed focused, she seemed....happy". "Well she was also blinded by that Dean kid".
Sophie exhaled slowly, letting it all sink in. Then she remembered.
"Do you remember me mentioning how upset she got when we questioned her about Dean yesterday?". "Yes, now that you brought it up". "I saw Olivia and Dean at the mall yesterday". "What were they doing?". "Fighting". "Like physically?". "Oh no, no. Just verbally". "Could you tell who was madder of the two?".
Sophie tried to picture the scene in her mind. Most of the scene is a blur, except for one thing. Olivia's eyes. There was almost a pleading desperation on Olivia's as she watched Dean walk away. Something Sophie had never seen in Olivia's eyes.
"Dean". Ian practically jumped off the bed. "If that guy thinks he's going to get away with it he's got another thing coming" he says, trying not to lose his temper. Sophie sprung up and placed her hands on his arms in an effort to calm him. "Stop it! Let's not jump to conclusions. We don't even know that the police are looking into him as a suspect yet". "Oh please! It's pretty clear that he's responsible for Olivia's disappearance and everything. If they're not looking into him as a suspect they should be". "Look, I don't want to say anything bad about Olivia, but how do we know she's telling the truth. She lied about the cult, who's to say she couldn't be lying now too".
Ian nodded in agreement although it was hard to admit that he could be fooled by his sister once again. "I guess I just figured she wouldn't lie to the police too, I want to believe her. I don't want to believe that could do something so unfeeling and destructive  as involve someone's who's innocent".
Sophie bit her lip, unsure of what to do or say. "I know" she simply said. She gently ran her hands up and down his arms, she could sense him relaxing. "Ian, even if she is lying that doesn't necessarily mean it's for destructive reasons. She could be scared or even protecting someone". "That's what scares me the most. If Dean is responsible at least I know. At least I can protect her from him. If it's someone else I wouldn't know who so I could protect her". "That's nice that you want to protect her but you're not always going to be able to do that, no matter how much you do or try". Ian laughed sarcastically. "Geez, thanks Soph. I feel a lot better". "Yeah, I'll admit it, that's kind of depressing to realize. But don't forget that Olivia has more people willing to protect her rather than harm her. And anyone that would try to harm her now either has a death wish or is insane".
"Thank you". "For what?". "For helping me to keep my sanity". Sophie smiled at him winsomely. "Of course. I couldn't let the boy next door been sent away in a straight jacket. What would the neighbors think?". He placed his hand under her chin and guided it carefully upward. He leaned down letting his lips meet hers. He kissed her.
At first she just stood there. Then she started to kiss him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. A flood of emotions swept over her and she was overwhelmed. Unable to rationalize the moment, put it into words, or even care to do so. He leaned into her more, accidentally causing her to stumble backwards. She couldn't help but giggle lightly as she tried to regain her balance. "Whoa! Don't get all weak in the knees on me". "I can't help it, you just have that effect on me".
He started to kiss her again but was interrupted by the door swinging open. They are shocked to see Olivia in the doorway, propping herself up by the door-frame. "Hi" Olivia finally speaks. "Hi Liv" Sophie replies numbly. "We just got home. We thought we might go out for dinner. Would you like to join us Sophie?" Olivia explains. "Thanks, but my mom is expecting me for dinner. She says hi by the way. I really should be leaving. Nice to see you Live". "You too".
Olivia stepped back out of the doorway letting Sophie dart out. "Bye" Ian called out after her. Olivia kept her eyes fixed on Sophie until she had completely disappeared from the hall. Then she turned back to her brother, who was standing in his room awkwardly with his arms folded. "What?" he asked, breaking the silence. "Nothing". "We were just..." he tried to explain. Olivia shifted her weigh, preparing to hear his explanation. "She had something in her eye" he fibbed. "Sure". "I'm starving. I feel like Mexican tonight".
             ******************************************
When Sophie got home she smelled spaghetti sauce cooking on the stove. She hears her mother humming softly. She looks towards the mantle and sees the fall decorations displayed tastefully. She falls back on the front door and pushed her hair back from her face. Contemplating what had happened. Then she decides her room would be a more conducive environment to think everything over.
So she dozily ascends the stairs, headed for her room. But she is stopped by the sight of Ted, in his room, the door open.
"Hey brother!" she said, knocking on the door-frame. "Hey sis" he replied, his voice conveying how busy he was at the moment. "Can I come in?". "I guess". Ted laughed as thought she were stupid to ask.
He opened his top drawer and started to rifle through it's contents. "What are you doing?" she asked, "Putting my clothes out for tomorrow". Sophie takes a seat on the carpeted floor. She leaned back on her hands and looked up at her brother as he pulled more clothes out of the drawer.
Looking at him from this angle makes her feel like a child again. Short and insignificant.
"I do that too. We must get it from mom" she remarked. Ted nodded, holding an olive colored tie up against a tan shirt. "How did you like helping out today?" he asked. She shrugged noncommittally. "It was okay. Lots of files". "You're telling me". Sophie picked at a piece from of the carpet. "I talked to Andrew some today" she said. "Oh yeah? What about?". "You leaving the company two or three month ago".
Ted finally looked up. His face was a mix between caution and anger. "What exactly did he say?". "I think the questions is what's the truth Ted?". Ted crossed his arms and squares himself to his towards his sister. "I haven't lied about anything". "I never said that". "But that's what you're implying". "I just want to know what happened in Delaware". "It was time to leave". "And the money?". "What money?". "The money that you started the company with. From Aunt Besty. It's funny how I've never met or even heard of Aunt Besty". "Frankly, I don't have to tell you, nor do I care to" he replied, almost yelling. "You're right But that doesn't help your case". "I didn't know I was on trial". "That's not what I meant".
Ted stared her down. "You know what, I don't care. Ge out, now!". Sophie jumped up at the sharp yell of Ted's voice. "Listen, I'm sorry" she apologized. "Just leave" he said, pointing to the door. Sophie walked carefully out of his room, just in time for him to slam the door behind her.

Chasse Secrets Chapter 18

Sophie was reclined on her bed, a book in her hand. She had been re-reading the same line for quite some now. She just couldn't seem to concentrate. What could the evidence be, she thought. A scarf? A shoe? A knife? She shook her head, trying to clear her mind of those thoughts.
"Dinner!". Sophie sprang to her feet at the sound of her mother's voice. The aroma of homemade chili and cornbread wafting under her nose as she entered the kitchen. "Can you set the table?" Mrs. Duvall asked Sophie. Sophie nodded, grabbing the bowls off the counter along with some utensils from the drawer.
Once she had meticulously place every bowl, spoon, and knife on the cheery stained table they sat down, said grace, and dug in.
The usual discussion ensued, things like "how was your day?", "did you hear about Walter?". But Sophie was miles away. Which wasn't abnormal for her since Olivia's disappearance and re-appearance.
"And then I went down to the courthouse to change my name to purple toenail" Ted sarcastically announced. Sophie jerked her head up from her bowl. "Sophie, what's up?! You've been completely zoned out ever since we sat down" Ted asked. "I'm just pretty tired, I didn't sleep well last night" she lied. "It was probably something you ate" he replied.
"So how's the business coming along?" Mrs.Duvall asked, taking a heaping spoonful of chili. "Not bad, not bad" Teddy answered. "Who will be working with you?" Mrs. Duvall inquired. "Let's see, some friends from Delaware, a few from college, Henry from church, that's about it so far" he told them, counting them off on his right hand. "I was wondering if you'd be interested in helping your big brother" he said, addressing Sophie. "Um, sure. How exactly?" she answered, leery of what her brother had in mind."Well I have a ton of papers and stuff to organize tomorrow after church" he explained. " Okay, I don't have anything to do tomorrow anyways" she said as she took a swig of water. "Great! We'll pick lunch up on the way" he replied. Sophie smiled cordially. She could see her mom beaming down at her bowl.
Carol had been in unusually high spirits since her son's return. Sure, she was happy that he had been flourishing in his PR firm in Delaware, but the fact that she rarely got to see him really ached at her. Not that she ever let anyone see that, particularly her children. Over the years she had become quite adept at keeping her emotions in check, for the sake of those around her.
"So how's your classes going dad?" Sophie asked, hoping that would rouse him to discussion. "Let's just say, there are those who who come my class prepared and those that expect me to force-feed the scriptures to them. My classes consist of mostly the latter". Sophie nodded.
That was her father's biggest complaint every semester. He would whine, grumble, and be generally amazed at how unprepared most of his students were. One year he even had a student, who wasn't doing well by any standards, say that the only reason he wanted to become a minster was because he thought it was an easy job. To which Mr.Duvall responded by laughing exuberantly.
But every once in a while there was a student that surprised him. For example Kurt Henderson, a native of Iowa. Mr.Duvall was so impressed with his zeal and understanding of the Bible that he took him under his wing, helping him acquire the position of youth pastor at the Duvall's own church last year. Truthfully Sophie and her brothers were a bit resentful of their father's close relationship with Kurt. But Sophie had warmed up to him as she got to know him more. She couldn't really blame her father knowing he had always wanted to have one of his children go into some form of the ministry.
"Why don't you just go ahead and retire? You've been talking about it for months" Carol interjected. "Because, what would I do? Garden? Besides I still have one child to put through college" he said, through a mouthful of cornbread. "That's true" she replied, reminded that her youngest would soon be gone.
"How's Olivia?" Ted questioned. Sophie swallowed and then proceeded with her answer. "Good, I guess. They found some possible evidence".
                            *******************************************
"Something tells me you're not very interested in the movie" said Meredith, rolling her eyes playfully at Lars as he nibbled at her neck. They were thirty minutes into the movie and Lars had barely glanced at the t.v. screen. It was an indy film. Boy goes to college, meets a girl from London, she moves back, he goes after her, he falls in love with her London roommate. Sub-par acting, but breath-taking scenery.
"What can I say? Everything seems so boring in comparison to you" he gushed, letting his forefinger trace the line of her jaw. "I can't agree with you there" she replied, faking a modest tone. "So what did you do today?" she asked. "I sat here, cried my heart out that you weren't here, and ate potato chips" he teased. "You're so funny". "Actually I had classes to teach until about twelve-ish, but later I did eat potato chips" he informed her. She laughed amusingly. "What about you?" he asked, resting his chin on his hand. "I went shopping with Sophie, Carson, and Olivia". "Oh really? How is Olivia?".
Meredith pondered his question thoroughly. The truth was she hadn't the slightest clue how to answer. One minute she behaved as though nothing had happened. The next, she was dodging questions and being defensive  like they were putting her on the witness stand. But then again she had always been elusive. Why would they expect things to be different now? Especially with such a delicate subject.
"She's Olivia". Lars didn't seem very satisfied with that answer. He opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by his phone chiming. With an annoyed look on his face he pulled his cellphone out of his pocket. He quickly glanced down at the caller I.D. on the screen, and hung up. "Who was that?" Meredith questioned. "My mom". Meredith raised her eyebrow at him. "You hung up on your mom?". "It's no big deal. I'll call her back later". Lars reached across Meredith for the remote, turning the volume up. "Now let's get back to the movie" he announced, grinning warmly. Meredith smiled in return, and laid her head down on his chest.
She tried to focus on the movie but she just couldn't. What kind of guy hangs up on his own mother, she thought.
                      *************************************************
Sophie turned the shower knob off, hearing the last drops of water drip rhythmically. She stepped out and wrapped the tangerine towel around herself. Dinner had ended roughly two hours ago. Her dad and mom were studying their Sunday school books for tomorrow, and Ted was out catching up with friends, so the house was quiet.
She tip-toed to her room, her parents' voices coming from downstairs. Once she was in her room she shut the door. She strolled towards her drawers, searching for some comfortable clothes. When she found what she was looking for she pushed the drawer back into place. She flung her towel onto her bed her and slipped her sweats onto her cold body.
He mind kept drifting back to Olivia. It took all her energy to not let herself call over there and ask about what they found. They didn't need her prying into to their personal affairs. If she wants me to know she'll tell me, she told herself.
She walked out into the hallway, grabbed a towel from the linen closet and proceeded to towel dry her hair. As she scrunched her hair in the fluffy towel she slowly opened her blinds. She eyed the Webbs' gravel driveway. Ian's car was there. She speculated as to how long they had been back. One hour? Two hours?
She snapped her attention back to her room. He eyes fell upon her ballet vocabulary book. That should get my mind off of things, she thought. She picked it up along with a ball point pen and a notebook. She leaned back on her bed and flipped to a fresh piece of paper. She read. She wrote. But it was purely mechanical. She couldn't even try to absorb the words. It was like a rubber-ball being thrown at a wall. It made contact, but it didn't stick.
After about an hour she just gave up. She drowsily slid off her bed, hoping a little exercise would help. She laid back on her pink rug, her legs to the window. She sucked in her abdomen and crunched upwards. One, two, three, she counted in her head. She steadied her breathing to the timing of her crunches.
Forty-eight, forty-nine, fifty. She rolled over and stretched her stomach muscles out. She leaned back into child's pose, inching her finger-tips forward. A glass of milk would be great right now, she thought. She sprang to her feet to close her blinds, rolling her neck in a circle. When she peered out the window she was startled to see someone standing at her mailbox, staring, directly at her.
                    *********************************************
"How could you? I trusted you!". Carson was sitting on the living room sofa eating popcorn and watching absolutely predictable soap operas. Her parents were out on their  weekly date night, and her brothers were upstairs glued to their video games. She had called Lars earlier, hoping his parents had left already. But he didn't answer. She guessed they must have a lot of catching up to do. Besides who would she get to watch her brothers. It would be pretty hard to explain to her parents why she wasn't there when they got back.
She went into the kitchen to re-fresh her popcorn supply when the doorbell rang. She backtracked to the front door. She peaked out of the peep-hole. Sophie. She unlocked the door and swung it open. She watched Sophie strode into her living room, her eyes pointed straight forward.
"Hello?" Carson mumbled, waiting for some sort of explanation. Sophie squared herself towards Carson."Hi" she spoke. "Is that all? You just came by to say hi". Sophie shook her head. "Sit" Carson motioned to the sofa. They sat down on the sofa. "I think someone was watching me" Sophie blurted out. Carson's eyes grew big. "What? Where? When?" Carson asked. "I was in my room doing some crunches just before I came over here and I got up to close my blinds and I saw someone at my mailbox" Sophie answered. "That's all?" Carson asked. "Pretty much, except for the fact that he or she was staring up at my window" Sophie replied. "Well, that is sorta creepy. But I doubt that it's anything to worry about" Carson assured her. "Says you! You don't have some creep lurking around your house". Carson rolled her eyes. "How do you know it wasn't just someone passing by? Maybe it's not what you think". I just know". Carson rested her hands on Sophie's shoulders. "Soph, it's not uncommon for people to see things after a traumatic event. You have been a little jumpy".
Sophie shrugged Carson's hands off of her shoulders. "I'm not delusional" she protested. "Listen, I haven't told anyone but I think I know what might have happened to Olivia" she said, startled at the words flowing from her own mouth. "Are you serious? How?". "Ian. He said that Olivia had been involved in a cult, he told her to leave it but he's not sure if she did. Some of the members had become involved in witchcraft as well. That's the real reason we were in the woods the night we found her, we thought we might be able to find exactly where they met, we thought maybe it would help us find Olivia" Sophie explained.
"Do the police know?" Carson asked. "Yes and no" Sophie answered evasively. "What does that mean?". Carson folded her arms securely. "Ian, told them about the cult, but he left out that he might know who's in the cult". "And that is?" Carson waited for her response. "I don't know yet". "Why didn't one of you tell the police that part". "I have no idea! It seemed like a good idea at the time? Plus we don't have any hardcore evidence".
Carson gnawed impatiently at her thumbnail. "So you think someone from the cult is stalking you" Carson added. "Well it sounds a little insane when you say it" Sophie said, pushing her hair back. "I don't think you're insane" Carson assured. Sophie smiled sheepishly. "Thanks. I'm glad someone thinks so". "Who thinks you're insane?". "Me" Sophie admitted.
"Does Olivia remember anything about the cult?". Sophie shrugged. "I wouldn't know. I haven't asked" she admitted. Carson let out a deep slow breath.
"Would you like some ice cream?" Carson asked abruptly. She was already heading towards the kitchen when Sophie nodded yes. Sophie tagged along behind her. Carson brought a carton of cookies 'n' cream out of the freezer. Then she got two blue bowls and a pair of spoons.
"Do you think Olivia remembers things and she just doesn't want to tell anyone. Like maybe she's scared to tell" Sophie mused. Carson glanced up from her scooping to see Sophie leaning on the counter. "Whatever happened the police are bound to uncover it soon, with, or without Olivia's memory to vouch. As for whether she remembers anything, I can't say. She's always been hard to read". Carson went back to scooping.
Sophie pursed her chap-sticked lips together, a sign that she was either satisfied with Carson's response, or lost in a completely implausible scenario regarding Olivia. Carson shoved one of the bowls at Sophie before she walked back into the living room. Sophie picked the bowl up, cradling it in her hands, and followed her back.
"So what were you up to before I barged in?" Sophie asked, plopping down on the end of the sofa. "Eating popcorn, watching soap operas, missing you-know-who". "Why aren't you with him now?". "His parents are over. I'll see him tomorrow". Sophie nodded, shoveling a cold lump of ice cream into her mouth."What were you up to before you barged in on me?" Carson asked. "I actually went over to Olivia's house to see how she was after the scene at the mall. That's what I forgot to tell you". Carson gave her a puzzled look. Sophie swallowed another spoonful. "They found some possible evidence" she announced. "Like what?". "I don't know. I haven't talked to her since this afternoon".
Carson bit her tongue, preparing to speak. "How come you haven't told Olivia you know about the cult?" she asked. "I'm not really sure. I guess I thought it might cause more harm than good if she didn't remember about the cult". "What do think now?" Carson returned. Sophie clanged her spoon around in her bowl, listening to it's out of rhythm chime. "That maybe, it's worth the risk". Carson shot up from her place, taking both empty bowls into her hands. "Well whatever you do, I'd plan what I'd say to her extremely carefully" Carson advised, her voice trailing slightly as she walked into the kitchen. "Thanks, but I don't think I'll tell her too soon. Maybe if we're lucky the police have everything figured out by now" Sophie hoped, cracking her neck. "Amen to that" Carson interjected.
"You know what I think" Carson added, as more of a statement than a question. Carson took her place next to Sophie once again. "I think we need to get our minds off of Olivia, cults, and potential stalkers. And do you know how we do that?" Sophie shook her head cautiously, a slight smile spreading across her lips. "We watch completely over the top soap operas" Carson turned the volume up. "Yes! Something more dramatic than our own lives" Sophie replied, her fist in the air as though it were a triumph.
They let their minds become involved in the intertwining plot of the show. The maid had just stolen the lady of the house's diamond ring, when it happened. Crash! They jolted at the sharp shattering noise coming from upstairs. "What was that?" Sophie exclaimed. Carson swallowed hard before before she spoke. "Something tells me your stalker has gps".

Chasse Secrets Chapter 17

Olivia stood outside the studio eying the door handle. It had been five days since she had left the hospital. Today was her first day back to dance. Yesterday had been her first day back to school. She wasn't at all prepared for her peers' reaction to her homecoming. The whole time she felt like she was watching someone else's life. Like a really bad made for t.v. movie with no pause button. People whispering, teachers smiling compassionately. It's ironic how people that didn't even like her were suddenly welcoming her home, as though she was their dearest friend. The next day wasn't any different.
All the events of the past five days played through her head as she stood in front of that door. Finally she swung the door open and stepped inside. The lobby was empty of dancers. Only dance bags scattered here and there. The picture of the little girl and her pointe shoes was crooked as always. And the last bit of sunlight was seeping in from the cracks between the blinds.
She journeyed down the narrow hall toward the students' lounge. She dropped her bag down on the bench. She wriggled out of her jacket and slipped off her yoga pants. She grabbed her ballet shoes and skirt from her bag and put them on. She hurried to the back room, fixing the pins holding back strands of hair.
When she entered the room they were all standing at the barre' going over a barre' exercise. They barely acknowledged her as she found her place at the barre'. "Hello Olivia" Mrs.Emma said. A few of her friends waved or said hello but for the most part they were engrossed in the combination. It was as if she had never left.
                       **************************************
"You should have seen your face Soph" Carson said, in between laughing. Class had just ended and the dancers were making their way to the students' lounge. "Hey! I can't help it, Dean was just about to drop me" she shot back. "It's okay Sophie! They just wish they could make faces like that" Meredith said, placing her hand on Sophie's shoulder. Olivia laughed.
How strange it was for them to hear her laugh, to see her face, just to know she was there. For a time they feared that the next time they would see her would be in a coffin. And now here they, together again. Like it should be.
"In all the time I've known you, I've never seen you look so scared" Olivia noted, a nostalgic grin on her face. "You try almost getting your head busted" Sophie quipped. "Ugghh" Carson whined. They all shot her a look of confusion. Carson slammed her pointe shoe in her bag. "I tape my toes, and I tape my toes, and I still get blisters" she vented. "I'm telling you, it's because you use too many pads. You need to build callouses" Meredith reminded her. "Yeah, yeah! I'm going to get some band-aids from the office" Carson said, playfully stomping her way out.
Meredith shook her head as untied her own pointe shoes. Sophie sat down on the carpeted floor and straddled her legs against the wall in a stretch. Carson burst into the room, band-aids in hand. "Go play in traffic" she sarcastically said to Sophie. "I love you too" Sophie replied, the cheesy smile of a five year old on her face. "I remember we used to have contests to see who was more flexible" Olivia remembered. "Gee, I wonder who would win" Meredith teased. "Carson won a couple of times" Sophie interjected. "And oh how I loved rubbing it in your face when I did" Carson added, carefully placing the band-aids on her blistered feet. "The first sleepover we had we all waited until you feel asleep to see if you slept in a perfect split" Olivia said. Everyone laughed uncontrollably.
They didn't even notice that everyone except for the teachers had already left. Pretty soon they were all ready to leave themselves. "Hey! We should all go shopping tomorrow!" Meredith suggested, swinging her dance bag over her shoulder. "I am so in!" Carson exclaimed. "Me too! I could pick you all up" Sophie offered. "Sounds like fun" Olivia replied. "Is 10 good with y'all? I want to get there before all the good sales are gone" Meredith said. They nodded in response. "See ya tomorrow" Olivia said as she walked out the door. They watched her as she disappeared out the door. "She's a walking miracle" Sophie said. "You can say that again" Carson replied, her hand on Sophie's shoulder. "Well I guess I should be leaving" Carson added. "Bye!" Meredith and Sophie called after her. "I need to talk to Mr.Lars about my solo, I'll see you tomorrow" Meredith said. "See you!" Sophie replied. Sophie left.
Once she had gone Meredith hurried to the office and knocked on the door. Mr.Lars opened the door. "They're all gone" he said, smirking. She beamed. He pulled her close to him, kissing her intensely
How could something so wrong, feel so right she thought. Meredith had never thought their age difference was a big deal. In fact she liked that he was older than her. He was more mature and stable than most guys her age. The first time she saw him she was completely transfixed by the sight of him. His broad shoulders, his surfer hair. But it was his overwhelming personality that really hooked her.
When he was done he gently rested his head against her's. "What are you doing tomorrow?" he asked. "Well I have plans for the afternoon, but I'm free after that" she replied. "Great! My place at 6?" "Perfect". He ran his his hand slowly over her cheek, which made her blush sightly. "I love when you blush" he gushed. He kissed her one last time and she was gone, letting the door slam.
Once he was sure she has gone he hurried towards the back door. He opened it and motioned to Carson, who was waiting in her car. She got out of her car, locking it behind herself. "I love when you get to lock up the studio" she exclaimed, as she walked to him. "Me too" he said, reaching for her. He kissed her, no differently than he had Meredith. She pulled back from him. "Hey! What are you doing tomorrow night?" she asked. "Tomorrow night my parents are coming for dinner" he fibbed. "Awww, that's too bad" she pouted. "I know! But maybe Sunday night!" he suggested. "Sounds good!".
                   *****************************************
"So what do you think?". Carson was prancing in front of Meredith and Olivia in a powder blue off the shoulder sweater. "Oh I'm in love with that color" Meredith said, her eyes big. "Wait! What color?" Sophie yelled from inside a changing room. "Powder blue" they yelled back. "Oh pretty!". "I like it, but I think it washes you out a little" Olivia observed, her chin resting in the palm of her hand. "Really?" Carson exclaimed. "Yeah! I think a nice jewel tone would be better on you". Carson thought about Olivia's remark for a second, then started to head back to her dressing room, when Sophie came out.
She was wearing a strapless knee-length blush-colored dress. She spun around in a girly fashion. "Love it, or hate it?". "Love" Olivia, Meredith, and Carson exclaimed in unison. "What is it for?" Meredith questioned. "Oh, no reason! Just wanted to see how it would look" Sophie replied. "Well it looks amazing" Carson assured her. "Are you sure it's not for a guy? Say, my brother" Olivia said, trying to appear nonchalant.
Sophie's face turned scarlet. "Uh no! What makes you think I like your brother?" Sophie protested. Olivia got up and started looking at some mini skirts. "I never said you liked him". "Is there something I'm missing?" Meredith asked, her arms crossed. "Nothing" Sophie answered her quickly. "My brother and Sophie are in like with each other" Olivia blurted out. Sophie rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Oh come on Sophie! We've all seen how you two look at each other" Carson told her. "So? A look doesn't mean much!" Sophie said, not quite sure whether she was telling them that or herself. "You know it would be kinda epic if y'all did start dating, and then y'all got married and we would be sis-in-laws" Olivia said excitingly. "Awww I wish I had a brother you could marry" Carson said. "While I would love to be sister-in-laws with all of you, I don't plan on marrying anyone's brother" Sophie informed them. "But you have to admit it wouldn't be such a burden to date Ian" Meredith added with a flirtatious wink. "I never said it would be a burden" she said, contemplating her reflection in the full-length mirror.
"Speaking of burdens, how's the soon-to-be step-sister?" Sophie asked, slyly changing the subject. "Out of sight, and out of mind. Well, until you just mentioned her" Meredith sarcastically answered. "How do you feel about a new step-dad?" Carson asked. "If he wasn't Bianca's father he'd be great. He's relaxed, funny, nice, not at all like her".
Olivia picked up a magenta halter top and swiftly threw it at Meredith. "Here! Try this on, it's so you!" said Olivia. Meredith gave it a once over and then shot Olivia a look. "Okay, maybe it's more me, but you'll look great in it" she assured her. Meredith reluctantly headed towards a dressing room, the halter top in hand.
Carson took one last look at herself in the sweater and then went back to her changing room as well. Olivia edged her way to Sophie, who was still evaluating the dress in the mirror. "Hey! I'm sorry for embarrassing you about my brother" Olivia spoke barely above a whisper. Sophie looked up at Olivia's image in the mirror. "It's fine, don't worry about it!" Sophie replied, in a similar tone. "Listen! I can tell that you and Ian have grown closer since I went missing. I can also tell that you feel a little guilty over it, but I want you to know that you shouldn't feel guilty, I understand" Olivia confided. "You're a pretty remarkable person, you know that?" Sophie said. "Yeah, I know" Olivia joked. "You don't know how many times I wished I could talk to you". Sophie could feel her eyes beginning to fill with tears. "Stop that crying right now. You can't get this dress wet or you'll have to pay for it". Sophie laughed exuberantly at Olivia's quip.
Suddenly Meredith burst out of the dressing room in the halter top Olivia chose for her. "Whoa" Sophie exclaimed. "Please tell me that's a good whoa" Meredith replied anxiously, her arms slightly swinging by her side. "Yes, it's a good whoa" Sophie assured her. "See! I told you it would look great it you".
Carson finally emerged from her dressing room back in her skinny jeans and purple flowy blouse. "You look great" Carson gushed. "Okay, it's decided! I'm getting it" Meredith announced. "Great! Does that mean we can leave and check out the other stores?" Olivia asked eagerly. "I'm ready to leave I just need to change" Sophie said as she disappeared into her changing room. Meredith followed suit. "Hey Car! I need to go call my mom, I told her I'd check in every once in a while, I'm just going outside for a minute" Olivia informed Carson. Carson nodded.
Olivia sauntered towards the door, the bell sounding to announce her departure. Carson wrigled her phone out of her back back pocket. One new message. It was from Lars. "I miss you baby". She smiled coyly at her phone when she read his message. "What are you smiling at?". Carson snapped her head up to see Sophie standing in front of her, her slender arms folded neatly. "Oh nothing". "Is it you know who?" Sophie questioned. "Yes. And don't say that out loud" Carson whispered. "I'm sure no one knows who I'm talking about" she replied.
Meredith popped out of her changing room. "Okay, I'm ready" she said. Meredith made her way to the check out, Carson and Sophie in tow. Meredith had just paid when Carson glanced out the store window to see Olivia talking to someone around the corner. She waited anxiously to see who it was. Olivia appeared agitated, almost mad. Carson nudged Sophie and Meredith. "Look!". They turned their attention to Olivia outside. Then the person around the corner came into view, it was Dean. He stormed off, headed to the parking lot.
None of them were quite sure what they had just witnessed. They didn't have much time analyst it when Olivia walked back into the store. They pretended to be looking at some things up at the counter while she made her way to them. "Hey! Y'all ready?" she asked. "Yeah" Meredith said, looking from Sophie to Carson. They all filed out of the store towards the main mall. Sophie, Meredith, and Carson keeping a watchful eye on Olivia.
             ******************************************
"When will I ever remember that it's the Burger Hut that puts the weird spice blend on their fries". Olivia shook the spices off of her fries as though they were diseased. The other watched her carefully. None of them had mentioned what they saw earlier. They thought maybe Olivia would say something about Dean, but she never did.  Instead she browsed through each and every store like nothing had happened. They weren't overly shocked by her totally zen nature afterwards, seeing as she had hardly been fazed be her own disappearance almost three weeks ago, at least to the naked eye. How could she not just break down after whatever it was, had happened. Or better yet, not knowing what had happened.
So here they were. Sophie sifting through her salad. Carson stirring her soda. Meredith swirling her pasta with her fork. And Olivia, with her weirdly spice fries. "So do you remember anything?" Carson inquired.
They were all a little taken back by Carson's sudden inquiry. "Like I told Sophie, I remember pieces"." And what is that exactly?" Sophie pushed further, seeing as the door was already cracked. Olivia stopped playing with her fries and brushed the spices off of her hands. "Well, I remember being in the woods and trying to find my way out, and then seeing you and Ian". "But you still don't know what happened to you?" Meredith asked. Olivia shook her head. "Do you think you were kidnapped?" Carson boldly inquired. They all were desperate to know the answer to that question, but cautious not to let their faces say so. "Hmmm good question, I'll get back to you when my memory comes back" she snared. "Sorry" Carson mumbled. "Liv, we saw you and Dean" Sophie admitted. Olivia stared questioningly at Sophie. "Yeah! So what! I ran into him". "You seemed pretty mad at him" Carson added. "Maybe he was asking too many questions". She was practically glaring. "I'm sorry, it's really none of our business. It's just sorta odd that we'd see the two of you fighting and then you act so secretive about everything" said Sophie, trying her best to calm the situation. "Yeah, you're right. It is none of your business. Was this the reason y'all wanted to hang out today? So you could pry me for information!". They all shook their head. Olivia quickly stood up, grabbing her purse and coat. "I'm leaving. I'll call Ian to give me a ride". "Olivia! Don't go!" Carson called after her. But it was too late, she was already head out with no intentions of turning back. Meredith leaned back in her seat letting out a deep sigh. "Well that was a nice lunch".
                       *************************************
Ding dong rang the door bell. It was a few hours later and Sophie was growing even more worried about Olivia by the minute. She wasn't worried about her being angry, more so why. What could they have been talking about that she couldn't share with them. But she wasn't here for answers right now, just to make peace.
"Hey! I wasn't expecting you". Ian seemed more delighted than surprised to see her, if truth be told. "Haven't you ever heard? Expect the unexpected". He laughed amusingly at her reply. "I guess you're here to see Olivia". "You would be right". "She told me what happened, by the way". "We really weren't meaning to pry". "I know that, Don't take it personally, she's been pretty testy whenever someone questions her about her disappearance". "Actually she seemed madder when we question her about Dean". A puzzled look swept over Ian's face. "She didn't tell you?". "No. She just said y'all kept bugging her about what she remembered".
"Ian, who's at the door?" sang Olivia's voice from the house. Olivia came bounding into the foyer. She stopped when her eyes feel on Sophie standing shyly on the porch. "Hi" Sophie greeted, with a friendly wave. "I'll let you two talk" Ian said, heading to his room. "Come in" Olivia said, closing the door behind her. "I came to apologize". "I'm sorry but you won't get the chance". Sophie carefully tucked her hair back, preparing to go a head anyways. "Because I'm the one who needs to apologize" explained Olivia. Olivia was nothing if not full of surprises. "You are?". "Yes. I completely overreacted. I stormed out of there like a child". "It's okay. We shouldn't have been so pushy". Olivia smiled appreciatively.
"How about some coffee" she offered, motioning to the kitchen. "I would love some". The two of them walked into the Webbs' kitchen. It was a good size kitchen, with an island and bar stool in the center. Olivia pulled two beige mugs out of the cabinet and sat them down on the island. "You still take your coffee the same way?" Olivia asked, as she scooped coffee into the coffee maker. "Of course" she answered. Olivia plopped down on one of the stools and patted one to her right, meaning for Sophie to take a seat. "I heard your brother Ted is back in town" Olivia mentioned. "Yeah, he's been back since Saturday" Sophie informed her. "Talk about ironic" Olivia said, referring to her homecoming. "I know, pretty weird huh. Maybe Alanis Morsiette can write a song about it" Sophie quipped. "Don't tell me, he was wearing a purple dress too" Olivia teased. Sophie flashed back to Meredith's confession in the hospital bathroom. "No, his was red" Sophie sarcastically replied. "Your hair looks great by the way" Sophie added. Olivia non-chalantly ran her hand over her glossy bobbed hair. "Thank you".
"Can I ask you something?" Sophie asked. "Sure". "What happened between lunch, and now?" Sophie questioned. "What do you mean?" Olivia shot back as she got up to get their coffee. "Well, at lunch you were kinda guarded about discussing your disappearance, and you're joking about the whole ordeal" Sophie explained, watching Olivia tediously pour her coffee. "I cam home, vented to Ian, watched a few soap operas. And I got over it. Simple as that" Olivia said, handing Sophie her coffee. "Really?" Sophie asked. "Really" Olivia echoed.
Sophie took a shallow sip of her coffee. "Where's your parents?" Sophie questioned. "At the police station" Olivia replied. Sophie nodded, although inside she was praying that they weren't there to talk about bringing herself in for more questioning.
Then out of nowhere Ian came rushing into the kitchen. "Hey Liv! Mom and dad just called, the police have some possible evidence they want you to look at".

Chasse Secrets Chapter 16

The media sure didn't waste any time. When Mr.Webb, Mrs.Nora, and Ian brought Olivia home that day there were at least six different news stations swarming their house. There were men in suits with bleached smiles and plastic hair. Women with permanently raised eyebrows and clothes that looked like they were all purchased at "I get paid to invade people's privacy" department store. "Olivia, where have you been for the last two weeks?" "Are they naming any suspects?" "Are you still seeing your cousin?" they shouted, their microphones outstretched as the Webbs tried to make their way toward the front porch. Ian and Mrs.Nora huddled over Olivia in order to shield her from their questions and cameras, while Mr.Webb shouted at the reporters to leave her alone. But they didn't listen.
Soon enough they were inside, hidden from the reporters, the questions, the cameras, the missing time. They escorted Olivia to her room as though she was in a new house entirely. She scanned the room casually, a meek smile appearing on her face. "I would have washed your sheets and comforter if I had known they would release you today, I just wanted to stay with you last night, I never thought" Mrs.Nora explained, her voice trailing. Olivia tenderly placed both of her hand on her shoulders. "Mom, it's okay, it's okay. I'm here" she said. Mrs.Nora hugged her daughter close to her, scared that she could slip through her fingers at any minute. "We're so glad you're safe, I don't know what we would have done if anything happened to you" Mr.Webb said, his eyes looking watery. It was so strange for Olivia and Ian to see their parents like this, so vulnerable, so human. "Well you don't have to think about that" she replied. "I want to catch up with y'all, but would it be alright if I just relaxed for a little bit?" she questioned, a wearisome look on her face. "Of course, take all the time you need" replied Mrs.Nora. "We'll be in the living room when you're ready" Mr.Webb told her embracing her.
Mrs.Nora and Mr.Webb left her room. Ian stood there with Olivia for a moment. "You know it's funny, when you were gone I kinda missed having you bug me when I would try to do homework" he said, scratching the back of his head. "Don't worry, I'll get on that right away" she assured him. "I love you sis" he hugged her tight. "Love you too". He left, closing the door behind him.
She went over to her closet, gently opening the doors. She reached up towards the top shelve and pulled down a purple floral box. She sat down with the box on her bed. She opened the box, laying the top beside her. There was mostly pictures, a few letters, a couple of tickets from previous recitals, ordinary at first glance. Except for one picture in particular. It was taken the day of June's party. Olivia, Sophie, Carson, Meredith, Cassie, and June were all posed, arms linked together, standing in front of the pool. Everything seemed perfectly normal, like a Monet landscape, at least in the focus of the picture. It was the background that troubled her. A person clad in black, looking onward at the scene unfolding, like the narrator of a play. People completely unaware of a stranger's presence. It made her skin crawl. Olivia hid the picture in her night stand drawer, and then she placed the box back up on the top shelve. Slowly she lied down on the bed, resting on her right side. She curled up her legs and softly weep.
                                 **************************************
"I don't care what you think, as long as it's about me" sang Ian's ipod. Olivia had been in her room for the last three hours, and he was beginning to think she would never come out. The question wasn't really would she come out but what would they do if she didn't. Ian was always thinking ten steps a head, even if those ten steps were highly unlikely.
Ring! Ring! Ian took his headphones off and picked his phone up off of the bed beside him. "Hello?" he answered. "Hi, it's Sophie". Ian sat up, switching the phone to the other hand. "Oh it's you! What's up?" "I was calling to check on Olivia. How is she?" "I'm not sure" "What do you mean?" "I mean we came home, she asked to relax, she's been relaxing in her room for the last three hours" "Has anyone checked on her?" "My mom checked on her a hour ago and found her sleeping".
As he talked he got up to look out the window, separating the blinds tediously. The sun was just starting to set, giving the sky that brilliant tangerine color. "I know she needs some time to herself but Mom's pretty anxious, I mean she had her daughter missing for the past two weeks" he said, letting the blinds snap back together. "Just give her some time, she probably pretty confused right now. I know I would be" she encouraged. "Yeah, it's just hard" "Sorry. I didn't mean to be insensitive" "No, no, you're fine" "Well, I guess I'll talk to you later, tell her I said hello" "Of course! Thanks for calling" "Sure thing". He hung up.
Ian was glad to have her home, but he just couldn't help but think about the past two weeks and what had really happened, whatever that might be. Even if they found a supposed kidnapper how would they ever know the absolute truth? Ian had heard all about these cases where they thought they had the right guy but then several years later they look back at the evidence they have and realize they had convicted the wrong man. And then not only do you have the guilt of putting an innocent man behind bars but then you'll never have peace of mind. Oh shut up Ian, your sister's home, be happy, he told himself.
Ian started to pick up his ipod when there was a shrill scream. He could hear it coming from Olivia's room. He ran towards her, his parents close behind. Swinging the door open he burst in. "Olivia?" Mrs.Nora exclaimed. Olivia was tossing and turning, screaming as loud as she could. They tried to wake her up, but she was in a deep sleep. "It's okay honey, we're here" Mr.Webb tried to calm her. Mrs.Nora rushed out of the room and came back with a wet rag. She laid it on Olivia's forehead. Ian watched them attend to her, not sure what to do. It was like witnessing a car crash and wondering if or when the brakes would kick in. That's the way he had always felt about his sister, even before she went missing. She was the car, and he was a concerned passerby, who seemed to always notice things a little too late.
She started to come to, slightly taken a back by them crowding around her.  Mrs.Nora sat down beside Olivia. "Are you okay?" she asked. Olivia rubbed her eyes and blinked a few times. "I guess" she replied. "What were you dreaming about?" Mrs.Nora questioned, brushing Olivia's hair out of her face. "I'm, I'm not sure" she said. "How do you forget your dream two seconds after you've had it?" Ian inquired, his eyebrows arched. "Ian don't press her" Mr.Webb warned. "Sorry" he replied. "You know Dr.Birch said you might have some night terrors, if you continues to have them he prescribed something to help" Mrs.Nora comforted her. "No, I don't need pills" she informed them. "I know! It's just in case you would need them" Mrs.Nora explained. "I watched that ghost hunting show before I took my nap, that's probably what I was dreaming about" Olivia suggested. "Well that explained things" Mrs.Nora exclaimed. "It might be a good idea to take it easy on the ghost shows for right now" Mr.Webb told her. She nodded in agreement. "I made you some tomato soup. Are you hungry?" Mrs.Nora asked. "Yes". Mrs.Nora squeezed her hand and left to get her soup. "You know when you were little that was the only soup your mom could get you to eat" Mr.Webb remembered. She smiled wistfully. "And mom would make you sandwiches in the shape of hearts when you were sick" Ian added. "Yeah, that was nice" her voice far away. "I think I'd like to eat my soup at the table" she said as she pulled back the covers and placed her feet on the floor beside her bed. "Of course!" Mr.Webb said, putting his hands in his front pockets.
She quietly tip-toed out of her room, her father following closely. Ian lingered a moment. He pushed his hair back forcefully, breathing dejectedly. How did all of this happen, he thought. One minute Ian and Olivia are kids chasing each other around the house and in the blink of an eye they're sixteen and one of them gets involved in a cult of all things. This wasn't supposed to happen.
He began to leave when he noticed one of the blinds askew. He started to fix it, but as he put it back in place he saw someone at the edge of  the drive-way staring right back at him. He couldn't make out a face. He pulled up the blinds to get a better look, but it was no use. For just as mysteriously as the figure appeared in the same way he or she did leave.

Chasse Secrets Chapter 15

Ian called the police to let them know Olivia had been found. Olivia didn't utter a word the whole time, she hardly even acknowledged them. The police arrived within ten minutes, along with an ambulance for Olivia. Ian and Sophie started to get into his car, intending to follow the ambulance to the hospital when the officers stopped them, saying they had some questions for them. By the time they were done a hour had passed.
They got in his car and hurried to the hospital. When they got there they were surprised to find Ian's parents already waiting. "Mom! Dad! How did you know?" Ian asked, as he walked towards them, Sophie in tow. Mrs.Nora and Mr.Webb quickly stood up to greet them. "The police department called us! Did she say anything?" Mrs.Nora exclaimed, frantically. "No, she didn't" Ian answered, clearing his throat. "Didn't y'all get to see her?" Sophie probed. "No, they rushed her back as soon as they got here. The doctor did come out though a few minutes after explaining that they needed to examine her" Mr.Webb elucidated. "They probably didn't want the media to know she had been found yet" Ian assumed.
The press hadn't been as relentless as they had imagined they would be for those two weeks. Sure there was the occasional neighbor who told the Windsor Falls newspaper how she thought she saw Mr.Webb handing money to a man in black on the night she went missing, or the deacon who said she seemed like the type to just take off, or the news report saying she was dating her first cousin, but overall the media hadn't been as vulture-like as they could have been. In fact no mention of Sophie being a suspect was made by the local news channels at all. She figured that the police didn't want them to know what was really going on so they reported whatever trash they could get their hands on. Although it was moot to try to keep the town in the dark, seeing as she was sure almost everyone in town already knew about her rumored involvement in the disappearance.
"Do you guys need anything?" Sophie offered. "Coffee would be great! What about you honey?" Mr.Webb said. "Um yeah, coffee. Thank you Sophie" Mrs.Nora replied, no expression upon her pale face. "You're welcome" said Sophie.
Sophie began walking to the elevators, her hands in the large front pouch if her over-sized gray sweater. "Wait! I'll go with you" Ian called after her. She waited for him to catch up to her. He pushed the down button. They stood there motionless until the doors creaked open. They waited for the people to file out of the elevator, and then they cautiously entered the small chamber. Ian pressed the "close doors" button before he spoke. "I can't believe we found her" he said, a barely there smile on his lips. "I know! It's just so surreal. First she goes missing, then we find out about the cult, and now it's as if she's been handed to us". "Well whoever handed her to us, I'm glad they did". "I feel like I can breathe now, now that I know she's safe" "Me too". Ian suddenly looked as if he had just realized something horrid. "What? What's wrong?" Sophie questioned, an alarmed look in her eyes. "I was just thinking. How suspicious does this look that we're just walking in the woods and we find her not even a mile from where we started looking. And besides that, if she has been truly handed to us, who handed her?"
                                **************************************
When Sophie and Ian got back with the coffee they noticed that not only had Sophie's parents shown up, so did her brother, Carson, Meredith, Cassie, June, Mrs.Emma and her husband Walter, Mrs.Hamilton, and Mr.Lars. Apparently they had all heard through the never-ending grapevine about Olivia's re-appearance. June had heard from Cassie, Cassie from Meredith Meredith from Carson, and so on. "What were you and Ian doing in York Park?" Ted asked Sophie. Sophie hadn't really been paying attention  to any of the group's chit-chat, until then that was. "What?" Sophie mumbled in a daze. "I asked what were you and Ian doing in York Park". Sophie tried in vain to remember what she had told the police. "We were seeing if we could find anymore evidence that Olivia had been there. Lucky us, we found Olivia instead" Ian interrupted. "Oh I see! Ted nodded in his skeptical way. Sophie smiled at Ian as she adjusted her dark blue jeans. "What  made the police search York Park in the first place?" Carson asked "Easy place to go unnoticed" Meredith suggested. "No. Everyone looks in the so called "good" hiding places. If you really want to find something you simply look in front of you" Cassie said, her usually small voice replaced with a stronger, more certain tone. "Does it really matter?" Sophie said, her leg bouncing up and down, up and down. "Sophie, we didn't mean it that way" June apologized, clearly anxious of Sophie's behavior. "Sorry. I'm just worried about Olivia, she seemed pretty shook up the last I saw her" Sophie excused herself. "How come you seem so calm about everything, Ian?" Cassie wondered. "I've learned to be the calm one. When something like this happens it's all you can do" he enlightened them, cracking his knuckles absentmindedly. Everyone grew silent, careful not to say the wrong thing.
"How did she look?" Carson blurted out. "A little startled, her dress was torn here and there, her hair had been cut" Ian answered. "She was wearing a dress! What did it look like?" Meredith probed. "Haha I can't believe you're so concerned with her dress" Sophie jested. "I'm just curious" "Um well it was short, it came to about her knees, and it was purple, and". Ian didn't get to finish his description, because as soon as he said purple a sickly look fell upon her fading golden face. "I need to go to the bathroom" Meredith mumbled, scurrying towards the bathroom. "I need to use the ladies as well" Sophie announced, bounding out of her stiff waiting area chair.
Sophie gradually pushed the door open. Meredith was standing in front of the long counter, her hands resting on the counter, her eyes staring down into the sink. "Sophie" she exclaimed. She quickly smoothed back her hair. "Listen, I know how confusing and draining this all is right now, it is for all of us. I'm here for you if you need to talk" Sophie assured her. Meredith started to say something when a woman suddenly came out of one of the stalls. The woman had short sandy blond hair which was pulled back with a barrette. She was wearing a pair of mom jeans and a "I'm proud to be an American t-shirt. They waited there in pure silence while the woman washed her hands, dried them, checked her teeth, brushed her hair, and eventually left.
Once she was gone Meredith went down the row of stalls swinging each door open. "I was fine until" she said, trailing off. "Until what?" Sophie inquired. Meredith habitually licked her lips before she spoke. "Do you remember that dream I had?". "Yeah, the one with Olivia and the mirrors". "Well, in it she was wearing a dress, a purple one". "You're kidding, right?". Meredith shook her head. Sophie josted herself upon the counter. "That's so....creepy!" Sophie grasped for words. "Tell me something I don't know" Meredith said dryly. "Has this sort of thing ever happened to you before?". "No! At least I don't think so". "So are you like some psychic now?". "I don't think one measly dream would classify me as a psychic, and even if it did I wouldn't want to be called that". "Why?". "I don't know, I guess it reminds me of some woman telling you you're either going to get a new job or get married within the next year, and neither of those situations will end well". "We should probably get back out there".
When Meredith and Sophie went out to the lobby the doctor came out, as if on cue. He was a handsome young man, no older than 27. He had the typical doctor look. Tall, strong jaw, dark hair. "Hi, I'm Dr.Birch" he introduced himself. "How's Olivia?" Mrs.Nora asked, her eyes as wide as saucers. "She has post-traumatic amnesia. It appears it was caused by trauma to the back of the head" he explained. "What does she remember?" Mr.Webb asked. "All she's talked about is being in the woods and not knowing where she was. She knows who she is, her birthday, what year it is, she asked where y'all were". "Did she have any other injuries?" Mr.Webb inquired. "Just some scraps, but she did have a cut on her left wrist that was a little deeper, maybe from a razor blade". "Can we see her?" Ian asked. "Of course! Just try not to overwhelm her. I ask that only you and your parents see her tonight".
With that said the rest of them started to drift away, not wanting to overstay their welcome and see her parents and brother in a more vulnerable, imitate state than they already were. Mrs.Emma compassionately embraced Mrs.Nora, saying things such as "we're here for you", "anytime", "take all the time you need", while Walter nodded sympathetically. Mrs.Hamilton followed suit, although more like a mother than a comrade. Mr.Lars groped for words of encouragement and meaning, but when he couldn't find them he simply said "I'm glad she's safe", and left never glancing at Carson and Meredith. Carol approached Mrs.Nora with Mr.Duval a step behind. She took Mrs.Nora hand in her's and said "She'll be just fine, after all she's your daughter". Mr.Duval shook Mr.Webb's hand firmly, Ted did the same. Carson, Meredith, Cassie, June, and Sophie said their good-byes finally, each one trying to sound optimistic, yet not irrelevant. And then they left Mr.Webb, Mrs.Nora, and Ian watching them disappear in the elevators, while Dr.Birch checked something on his clipboard. "Ready to see her?" he asked, as if they needed to think it over. They all nodded in unison, leaving the lobby with only the sound of the nurse doing paperwork.
                               ***************************************
Sophie didn't go to church the next day, instead she went to the hospital to see Olivia. She made brownies for her, although she was sure she wouldn't feel like eating. When she got there Olivia was awake. Mrs.Nora was sitting to Olivia's left, stroking her hand. For the first time in the past two weeks Mrs.Nora smiled. "Come in" she said. "Hi! How are you feeling?" Sophie asked, as she crept into the hospital room. "I have a slight headache, but I should be fine" Olivia answered, no eye contact involved. How foreign her voice sounded. "I made you some brownies" Sophie put the container down on her tray. "Thank you". Sophie could see Mrs.Nora hadn't slept at all last night. "She hasn't even touched her breakfast" Mrs.Nora remarked. "I never liked eggs" she explained. "It's so good to see you again" Sophie said, afraid she might get emotional. "It's good to be seen" Olivia replied, the most heartfelt smile on her face. "I'm going to get something to eat from the cafeteria. Are you going to be here for a while?" Mrs.Nora grabbed her beige purse from the chair. "Yeah! Of course!". Mrs.Nora leaned over Olivia and kissed her forehead. "I love you, Liv" she uttered, almost choking. "I love you too, Mom" she replied.
Sophie took the chair next to Olivia's bed while Mrs.Nora exited the room. "So had anyone else been by to visit?" Sophie inquired. "My grandparents. aunt Lillian, uncle Thomas, Rev.Grant, my dad and Ian left about a hour ago to pack me a bag so I have something to leave in" Olivia answered. "They're releasing you?". "Yeah, later today. They just wanted to monitor me overnight". "Have you remembered anything else?". "Just pieces". "Such as?". "Sophie! I really don't feel like being grilled right now". Sophie clamped her mouth close. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap. It's just that everyone's been asking asking so many questions I'm starting to feel like a living encyclopedia". "No. No, don't apologize. I shouldn't have pressed you".
Sophie glanced downward at her figiding hands, her thumbs dancing circles around each other. "You know, I've never seen you so serene. You and Ian have that in common". Olivia's eyes narrowed in perplexity at the mention of her brother. "Calmness. He's been very calm through out this whole ordeal" Sophie informed her. "Oh" Olivia said, practically under her breath. "Don't get me wrong! He's been scared about you like any brother would be". "I didn't mean "oh" like that, I meant "oh" like it sounds like you've been around him a lot since I've been gone".
Sophie wasn't quite sure how Olivia felt about that. She didn't want to speak too soon and say the first thing that emerged in her head. It would be no better than for her to walk in a room of broken glass, with the lights burnt out. "Um. I guess". Olivia didn't say anything right away, as though she was dissecting her reply.
Then came Ian, duffel in hand. "Well I couldn't find your black sweater but I found your white one" he said, laying the bag at the foot of her bed. "Thanks" Olivia responded. "Hello Sophie". "Hi". "Where's dad?" Olivia somewhat resembled a small child. Her clover green eyes much like her mother's last night. "He's actually signing your release forms" he told her. "I bet you can't wait to be home" Sophie said, smiling warmly. "You can't even imagine".

Chasse Secrets Chapter 14

Ted Duval was Sophie's next to oldest brother. He had always been the one itching to leave home, The restless one. He came home at Christmas and Thanksgiving but that was about it. After high school he attended college somewhere up north, then following that he took a job in advertising in Delaware.
Sophie hadn't seen him since last Christmas. Even then he wasn't truly there. It seemed that he had some urgent phone every five minutes. And when Sophie and her brothers were leaving to go get ice cream Christmas night like they always did, he declined, saying "sorry, I need to hit the hay, I have to get up early to head back".
After she saw him at The Morning Roast he joined her, Carson, and Meredith, and they all chatted for a while. Sophie could tell he was different. The biggest difference was his appearence. She was very much startled by her usually clean-shaven brother's image. His hair had grown longer and he looked like he hadn't shaven in a few days.
The other change in him was almost as evident. It was the fact that he hadn't checked his phone, talked about work, or informed them of the influence advertising had on America, since he got there. It was as if he was a completely new person. If she didn't know better she would have sworn it wasn't him.
Once the conversation had lulled and the last sip of coffee vanished they all went their separate ways, except for Sophie who went home with Ted. The whole way home all Sophie could think about was why was he here? She thought back to the coffee shop, playing it over and over in her head. "I missed y'all, I don't come home enough, and I want to change that" he explained. But why now, she thought. Her brother had never been the nostalgic type.
Soon they were home. When they walked in their mom popped out from the kitchen. When Carol saw her son her face lit up and she rushed to meet him. "Teddy! My boy!" she exclaimed, hugging him close. "Hi Ma! It's good to see you" he said. She released him, beaming. "Well, turn around let me look at you" she directed. He spun around extravagantly, with his best model expression. Sophie giggled lightly. "Aside from the hair and the beard you look just the same" Carol assured him. "Thanks he replied.
There was a pause in conversation between the two of them. "Hello?" Sophie chimed in. "Oh sorry, Sophie" Carol said. "I've just been waiting for Teddy's arrival since he called last Thursday". Sophie knitted her eyebrows together in confusion. "Last Thursday?" she repeated, eyes shifting from her mom to her brother. "Now wonder you looked so stunned to see me" Ted exclaimed, smacking his forehead. "I completely forgot! Teddy called last Thursday to tell us he was coming home, he told me to make sure I told you it clearly slipped my mind" she explained. "I would have called you myself, I've just been so busy tying up some loose ends in Delaware" he added. Sophie nodded, taking it all in, piecing everything together like a child strings beads on yarn.
"Hey is dad home?" he asked. "Uh yeah, he's upstairs" she told him. "Great!" he said, rushing to the bottom of the steps. "Dad! Come here" he screamed. "Someone's excited" Sophie observed. "Well there's something I want to share with y'all, I wish I could have Damon and Elliot here, so I could tell the whole family at once, but I'll take what I can get" he replied.
Mr.Duval came down the stairs finally. Once he was half way down he eyed his son and grinned brilliantly. He reached towards him pulling him tight. "Sit! I have something to tell you all" Teddy said, pulling away from his father. They all did as Teddy had instructed, no questions on their lips.
He took a steady, deep breath. "Well I'm sure y'all have been wondering why I'm back in town. And I guess I should just go ahead and put it out there. I'm starting my own advertising business" he told them, overflowing with excitement. "Here?" Sophie inquired. "Yep! Good old Windsor Falls" he answered. "Congratulations!" Carol practically shouted, clapping her hand together. "I'm proud of you son" Mr.Duval said. "Thanks mom and dad! Sophie, what do you think?" Teddy questioned.
Sophie wasn't quite sure what she thought. At first she was overwhelmed with joy to have her brother close to home, and she still was happy. She just couldn't figure out why he would want to come back now. And she knew it wasn't some mistake her mom forgetting to tell her he was coming home. Her mom was never this distracted.
"This is great!" she proclaimed. "Where are you planning on opening up?" Mr.Duval inquired, stroking his chin. "I found some office space for rent over on Bennett street" he informed them. "Oh those are nice" Carol encouraged. Teddy nodded. "I know! How could you afford the them?" Mr.Duval asked. "Oh well, I have some savings until things pick up" Teddy addressed. "Good for you" Mr.Duval said, a proud grin creeping across his face. "Why don't we all go out to dinner later in celebration of Teddy's new business?" Carol suggested. "I would love that Ma" Teddy replied.
Carol rose from the sofa eagerly. "I need to go call grandma and grandpa! I can't wait to tell them" she announced. "Pretty soon mom will have told all of Windsor Falls" Sophie remarked, watching her mother leave. Mr.Duval and Teddy chuckled at her quip. "Let her! It will be good for business" Teddy replied, winking. "I guess that's where you get your advertising skills" Mr.Duval mused. Ted grinned slightly, raising his eyebrows as if to say "maybe". I have to finish reading tomorrow's Sunday school lesson. You will be joining us, won't you?" Mr.Duval said to Ted. "Of course! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again" Ted answered. "Good" was all he uttered in response, and then he was gone. He certainly wasn't a man of many words. It always puzzled Sophie how a man who didn't seem to have much to say became a professor of theology. She chose to assume he simply never found anything as important as theology to even discuss the matter.
"So how do you feel about your big brother being under the same roof as you?" he teased, folding his arms confidently. "Hmmm, let me think about it, and I'll get back to you" she quipped. "In all seriousness I am glad to have you back. Maybe now we can do all those things we said we would do". "Sorry to disappoint you you but someone already invented a blanket with arms" he said dryly. Sophie rolled her amber lighted eyes. 'Yeah, it's a little too late for that idea, but that doesn't mean we can't try some of our other wacky plans" she reminded him. "You're right, why don't we try out one of those wacky plans tomorrow after church". "It's a plan".
                 *****************************************
Later that night around seven Sophie was in her room laying her clothes out for church. She picked up her remote and turned the t.v. on. A high of fifty-one they said. She sauntered over to her closet, and began to search for her apple green button up sweater. "The search for missing teenager, Olivia Webb is still on going" she heard the anchor woman frankly informed. She turned towards her t.v. to see a picture of Olivia. It looked like it had been taken some time during the summer. She was wearing a red polka-dot sundress, which made her almost black hair even more striking than usual. Sophie couldn't stand to see her image and hear their cold, detached, apathetic words. She abruptly flipped the channel.
Knock! Knock! She started to go answer the door but she heard some answer it before she was even out of her bedroom. "Hello Mrs.Duval! Is Sophie home?" she heard Ian greet her mother. "Yes, she's home. And please, call me Carol" Carol said, like she had told him hundreds of times. "Okay. Carol" Sophie could practically hear his boyish smirk as he spoke. "Sophie! Ian's here" her mom called up the stairs.
Sophie briskly cascaded the steps. She was delighted to see the spark in Ian's eyes as he saw her coming toward him. "Hi" she said when her feet hit the floor. "Hi. I was wondering if you would want to go get some ice cream" he explained. "I understand if it's too last minute" he quickly added. "No. I want to. Let me go get my coat" she said as she rushed back up the stairs. She came back down, buttoning her buttons as she went. "I won't be out long" she said, hugging her mom goodbye. Ian waved goodbye to her mom. Soon they were backing out of the drive-way. "I do plan on treating you to some ice cream, but first I need to take you somewhere".
                 ********************************************
Ian brought her to York Park, The same place where they had been looking for Olivia. Ian turned the engine off. They sat there in an awkward silence for a minute. "Would you mind telling me why we're here?" she asked. "I meant to tell you last night, but I got distracted" he told her, his face brimming with embarrassment. "Do you remember me telling you about the cult?" he questioned. "Yes. Does this have anything to do with what you didn't tell the police?" she inquired. "Yes" he said. "What I didn't tell the police was I think I might know who else was in the cult" he came clean. "How?" she exclaimed, her eyes bolting out of her head. "I found this in Liv's room. She hid it under her mattress" he said, unfolding a crumbled paper and handing it to her.
The paper had three large symbols on it, along with initials scattered around the page. "What is this?" she asked, not trying to conceal her bewilderment. "I think it's somewhat of a roster for the cult". "Well what do these symbols mean?". He took the paper back in his hands. "This one is the Celtic symbol for nine" he said, pointing to the symbol on the right. "This one is the Celtic symbol for youth" he pointed to the left one. "And this Celtic symbol represents immortality. I looked them up on the internet" he referred to the center one. "I think all these initials are the members of the cult" he further filled her in. "Do you have any idea who any of these people are?" she asked. "This one I'm sure is Olivia's" he replied. She glanced at the letter O.W. "I feel like I'm in some made for t.v. movie" she said, her gaze fixated on the paper. "You and me both" he added, taking a shallow breath. "What does this have to do with these woods?". "There's a map of the woods on the back" he answered, flipping the page over. "And you want to see what we might find where the trail leads" she assumed. "You read my mind"
They got out of the car. Ian got two flashlights from the backseat and handed one to Sophie. They ventured dauntlessly into the woods. Their flashlights shining like the light from a lighthouse guiding the boats home. In some respects it wasn't much different.
"So if we're here that means we need to go left" Ian instructed. They walked in that direction for a while until they heard a rustling sound. They halted, frozen. The sound came again. Sophie could feel her heart pounding. Ian took his phone out of his pocket, just in case nine-one-one was necessary. "Hello?" he called. Ian advanced a few steps. Then a strange expression came across his face, as if he had seen something. He ran. "Soph!" he yelled. She ran after him and was shocked with what she came face to face with. It was Olivia. She was just standing there, her gawky figure before them. Her usually long hair was cut short. Her dress had a tear at the hem and her sash was loose. It was purple.
